How to Check If ChatGPT Recommends Your Business
Check whether ChatGPT recommends your business by testing buyer prompts in a fresh session, logging names and cited URLs, then comparing answers to your site and competitors.
How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business: write five to ten buyer prompts, run each prompt in a fresh ChatGPT session without naming your company, and log every brand mentioned plus every URL cited. Repeat monthly with the same wording so you can see whether you are absent, misnamed, or cited behind a competitor.
When the fix belongs on a live site, run the AI brand visibility checker and read our AI SEO for local businesses guide for the page types that vertical needs.
This is a manual audit, not a rank tracker. ChatGPT answers change by model, account settings, and whether browsing is on. The goal is a repeatable sample you can act on: if buyers ask for the best option in your category and your name never appears, you have a discovery gap you can fix with pages and public facts, not with a single chat argument.
What this check measures (and does not)
You are measuring assistant recommendations and citations for prompts that precede a purchase or booking. You are not measuring total ChatGPT traffic, private enterprise logs, or every possible paraphrase of a question.
A clean check records four fields per prompt:
- The exact prompt text.
- Whether your brand name appeared.
- Which other brands appeared.
- Which URLs were cited, if any.
That log pairs naturally with the guide to fixing wrong ChatGPT facts when your name appears but the details are wrong, and with the Perplexity citation guide when you want the same buyer prompts tested on another assistant.
1. Write buyer prompts you can repeat
Start from questions customers ask before they contact you. Good prompts name a job, a constraint, or a place. Weak prompts ask whether ChatGPT knows your brand.
Examples of useful shapes (replace the bracketed parts with your market):
- What is the best [service] for [audience] in [city]?
- Which [software category] should a [team size] team use for [job]?
- Compare [option A] and [option B] for [use case].
- How do I choose a [provider type] when I need [urgent constraint]?
Write eight to twelve prompts. Keep them in a spreadsheet with a column for date and model. Do not edit the wording between months unless your offer or geography changed.
2. Run a clean ChatGPT session
Reduce noise so you are comparing prompts, not hidden context.
- Open a new chat for each prompt or clear context between prompts if your plan requires one thread.
- Do not paste your homepage first. Let the model answer from the question alone.
- Do not add "include my company" or "be unbiased" instructions. Neutrality instructions often change list shape in ways you cannot reproduce.
- Note whether the answer included browsing or citations. Save a screenshot or copy the text into your log.
If your buyers use a specific plan with browsing enabled, test that configuration. Testing a model without browsing when customers use browsing gives you a false negative for citations.
3. Log every brand name and cited URL
Transcribe names exactly as written. If ChatGPT uses a product name instead of your company name, record both. If it cites a directory or review site instead of your domain, record that URL.
Tag each row with one of three outcomes for your business:
- Named and cited: your brand appears and your site (or a page you control) is linked.
- Named without citation: your brand appears but the model points elsewhere for proof.
- Absent: competitors or generic advice appear without you.
Absent is the signal for new cite-ready pages, not for rewriting your homepage tagline. Missing service pages, missing city pages, and missing comparison pages are common reasons a competitor wins the list.
4. Compare answers to your site and competitors
For each competitor named, open the page ChatGPT cited or the page you believe supports the claim. Compare structure, not adjectives.
- Does their page open with a direct answer in plain language?
- Does the URL match one intent, or is it a long homepage?
- Do they publish pricing, service area, or limits where you stay vague?
On your site, search for the same intent. If no URL could answer the prompt without stretching, you found a content gap. The Google AI Overview playbook uses the same gap logic for another surface; the page shape overlaps even when the assistant differs.
5. Decide the next page to ship
Pick one missing intent from the log and ship one page this month. A practical row in your queue includes:
- Prompt cluster (the buyer question).
- Target URL (new or rewrite).
- Proof you will show (pricing band, service area, credential, or process).
- Recheck date (same prompts, same model settings).
Orchory is built for that execution step when you want the research and writing done for you: ranked buyer questions become cite-ready pages in your site design, and you approve before anything goes live. Paid plans start at $990/mo when you move from a single page into ongoing production. Cancel anytime if the pipeline does not fit.
If you prefer to start with a single live sample before you expand the prompt list, use the free AI brand visibility checker on one buyer question, then return here to scale the audit.
When the free visibility checker is enough
The manual log is the right default for a quarterly review. The free checker helps when you need one prompt answered today for a sales call or leadership update. It is not a substitute for a fixed prompt list over time.
Supporting checks on your domain still matter: the free SEO tools hub covers crawlability and on-page basics so cited URLs stay fetchable. The auto SEO tool workflow describes how Orchory turns gaps into pages you review, without asking you to live inside a dashboard export.
When you are ready for a first built page on your domain, send your site with the prompt cluster that failed this audit.
