Read this first

What a Content Credential does — and does not — prove

C2PA is genuinely useful, but it is not a lie detector for images. Here is the honest version.

  • It records processing, not authorship. A manifest says a file passed through a tool that signed it — not who made the underlying creative decisions.
  • Absence proves nothing. Most files carry no credentials at all. A screenshot, a re-save, or a format conversion strips the manifest, so "no credentials" never means "human-made" or "fake".
  • Presence is a claim, not a guarantee. A valid signature means the manifest has not been altered since signing and traces to a certificate — it does not independently verify the content is true.
  • AI is declared, not detected. When we say "AI-generated", we are reading a flag the signing tool wrote into the manifest. We are not analysing pixels or running a classifier.

What is C2PA?
C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) is an open standard for attaching a tamper-evident, cryptographically signed record of provenance to a media file — where it came from, which tools touched it, and whether it was declared AI-generated. Adobe, cameras, and a growing set of AI tools support it.
Do you upload my file?
No. The entire check runs in your browser using the open C2PA wasm toolkit. The file never leaves your device, and nothing is stored. That is also why it works instantly and needs no account.
Can this detect AI-generated text from Claude or ChatGPT?
Not yet. This tool reads C2PA provenance from images and documents, which is a solved, open standard. Text watermark detection (for example Anthropic's Claude watermark announced in August 2026) has no published detection spec yet, so no tool can do it truthfully today. We will add a text-detection mode the moment the spec ships.
Why does it say "no Content Credentials found"?
Because that file carries no C2PA manifest — which is the case for the vast majority of images online. It is not a verdict on the file: credentials are stripped by screenshots, re-saves and format conversions, and most tools never write them in the first place. Absence is not evidence either way.
